What is the difference between a dedicated server and a shared hosting plan?

A dedicated server is a computer server that you control, with full administration. It can be used for infrastructure creation projects, for big data, artificial intelligence or web hosting. Shared hosting is a solution that offers a preconfigured hosting environment shared between multiple people. Each user has their own space to store their files, databases, emails, and so on.

What is the difference between a dedicated server and a VPS?

A dedicated server is a machine physically located in a datacentre and can be linked to a personal computer. It is composed of its own computer hardware and does not depend on any other machine to operate. On the other hand, a VPS is a virtual machine (VM) created from a physical computer server. The resources offered by the VPS are virtual. It is a practical solution for dividing a server into different VMs using virtualisation software. A VPS is a low-cost alternative if you do not need all the resources offered by a dedicated server. A VPS can offer other advantages, such as resource scalability to support your business growth.

What is a dedicated server?

A dedicated server is a solution offered by an IT hosting provider. It is a physical server whose usage is allocated to one person. It can be distinguished from other solutions (cloud, web hosting) by the name “bare-metal server”. Bare-metal refers to the physical aspect of the server, which is delivered without a software layer. As the sole manager of a server, the client decides what is installed on it (operating system, software, etc.) and makes use of all of their allocated resources. There are several uses for a dedicated server: deploying virtual servers, big data projects, creating infrastructures using several dedicated servers, hosting websites and e-commerce websites, and more.

Which dedicated server should I choose?

Your choice of dedicated server depends on the project you want to create. The two important factors to assess are the server configuration and the services included.
The server configuration refers to the components (also called hardware): processor (CPU), RAM, storage, as well as the network. Different information is provided to help you make the best possible server choice, depending on the resources your project requires:

  • processor: Number of cores, thread, frequency
  • RAM: quantity, type and frequency
  • storage: quantity, disk type and RAID type, if available
  • public bandwidth: maximum bandwidth and usable quantity.

The features and services included with your dedicated server are also important to check, and some may be essential. This could include anti-DDoS protection, a backup space, or a service level agreement.
Public bandwidth is paramount: If the maximum bandwidth is always set, ensure that it remains unlimited during use, as it is with OVHcloud*. If applicable, you may need to pay an additional monthly fee for your usage.

*Excludes datacentres in the Asia-Pacific region.
