What is a VPS?
A VPS is a web hosting solution that is based on a physical machine, and created using virtualization technology. Users can access and manage their resources without constraints or limits. From storage and memory to disk space, everything is managed directly by the user, who can adapt it to fit their needs.

Did you know?
Wondering what the difference is between a VPS and a VDS?
The main difference between a virtual private server (VPS) and a virtual dedicated server (VDS) lies in the virtualisation method, and the availability of resources (i.e., whether or not they are dedicated).
How does a virtual private server (VPS) work?
A VPS uses virtualization to partition a physical server into multiple virtual instances. Each VPS owner has a portion of the server’s physical resources (processor, RAM, storage space, etc.). A VPS works like a standalone server, with its own operating system and software configuration. The user can also increase their performance in line with growing needs — all at a lower cost.
Users access their virtual machines remotely via a network protocol (SSH or RDP), then install and run their applications and services via a control panel in just a few clicks. VPS resources can be resized on demand to meet the user’s project requirements. Virtual private servers offer the flexibility required to adapt the resources associated with running web applications, and the traffic they can generate.
Advantages of a virtual private server
VPS servers offer many advantages.
Flexibility and customisation
You install and run your applications and services. You can resize your resources to suit your needs, directly from your hypervisor.
Performance
A VPS has allocated resources to ensure stable, reliable performance. Is your application likely to receive high levels of traffic? If so, one of our VPS solutions will be the right option for you.
Security
VPS instances are isolated from one another, which means your data and applications are hosted in a secure environment.
Scalability
You can resize your VPS’s resources to suit your needs as they evolve — and this will not affect the other instances hosted on the physical server
Autonomy
You manage your virtual server’s entire configuration, so you have total autonomy when it comes to managing your service.
Price
Virtual servers are affordable, and offer one of the best price-performance ratios on the market. Since VPS hosting is based on virtualisation, it does not involve purchasing a dedicated server, which is significantly more expensive. However, you will still get allocated resources and an isolated environment.

VPS or dedicated server?
Dedicated servers are physical machines, while VPS solutions are virtualized servers based on a physical machine. In addition to this technical distinction, they both have pros and cons depending on how you use them.
Performance
For applications with low to moderate traffic, a VPS and a dedicated server will both offer enough performance to keep your projects up-and-running. However, a dedicated server is better adapted to projects that will receive high traffic.
Customisation
You can adapt your VPS’s software and application configurations to fit your project. On a dedicated server, you can do all of this, and also customise your hardware.
Security
Your virtual instance is isolated from others, which means you can host your data securely. In addition to this, automatic backup options will help protect your data under all circumstances.
Flexibility
VPS resources can be easily rescaled to suit your needs as they evolve.
What can a VPS be used for?
From web hosting and running applications to website deployment and database management, there are many uses for a virtual private server. With a virtual server, you can host your web projects in a stable, reliable environment that is easily adapted to your needs. Since it is so flexible, you can optimise your system performance and offer maximum availability. For this reason, virtual private servers are well-suited to a wide range of use cases. From email servers and disaster recovery plans (DRP) to blogs and website hosting, a VPS is a quick, easy way to launch web projects.
What features are included with an OVHcloud VPS?
All of our VPS solutions include anti-DDoS protection, root access, API access, an IPv4 address, and a 99.9% SLA. As an option, you can choose Additional IPs, automatic backups and snapshots, as well as additional disks. In short, you can scale your virtual server to suit your needs and usage.
*For VPSs hosted in Sydney and Singapore: 1TB traffic/month for the Starter and Value ranges, 2TB/month for the Essential range, 3TB/month for the Comfort range, and 4TB/month for the Elite range. Bandwidth is reduced to 10 Mbit/s once the monthly quota has been exceeded.
